Coronaviruses are enveloped RNA viruses that are characterized by their crown of club-shaped peplomers (spikes). According to the CDC, there are seven coronaviruses that cause illness in humans. Of these, Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV), severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV), and severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) initially only infected animals but adapted to cause illness in humans. SARS-CoV-2 is the most recent of these coronaviruses identified, emerging in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The outbreak of this pathogen has since spread throughout the world, resulting in a devastating pandemic that continues to rage.
As in previous public health emergencies—such as Zika, SARS-CoV, MERS-CoV, and the Influenza A H1N1 2009 pandemic—ATCC is ready to partner with the global scientific community to prevent and contain this devastating outbreak.
