ATCC highly recommends that appropriate personal protective equipment is always used when handling vials. For cultures that require storage in liquid nitrogen, it is important to note that some vials may leak when submersed in liquid nitrogen and will slowly fill with liquid nitrogen. Upon thawing, the conversion of the liquid nitrogen back to its gas phase may result in the vial exploding or blowing off its cap with dangerous force creating flying debris. Unless necessary, ATCC recommends that these cultures be stored in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen rather than submersed in liquid nitrogen.
Incubate in an anaerobic atmosphere at 37°C for 24-72 hours. Incubate one agar plate aerobically at 37°C to check for contamination.
Anaerobic conditions for transfer may be obtained by the use of an anaerobic gas chamber or placement of test tubes under a gassing cannula system connected to anaerobic gas.

Shaking may improve growth. This strain may require a jump-start for confluency.
Growth occurs in the broth tubes within 24 to 72 hours. No growth was observed on sheep blood plates incubated aerobically or anaerobically. Anaerobe Systems Brucella Blood Agar (AS-111) can be used to analyze colony morphology and purity. Good growth was observed on pre-reduced Brucella blood plates incubated anaerobically.
VPI 0989, the type strain in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names was deposited in ATCC® (ATCC® 25578™) but was lost in both collections. A different isolate, VPI 0990 = ATCC® 33656™ = CIP 105953, from the same fecal sample has been deposited to represent the type strain. Because these isolates came from the same sample, Moore and Holdeman Moore believe that they are the same strain. According to Rule 18c, a neotype strain must be proposed in the IJSB (now IJSEM) and the proposal by Moore and Holdeman Moore is illegitimate. The neotype strain VPI 0990 = ATCC® 33656™ = CIP 105953 is not an established neotype (see Rule 18c).
