Helicobacter pylori strain USU101 is a clinically relevant human isolate obtained from a patient with gastric adenocarcinoma in Tirana, Albania. This strain is cagA positive (EPIYA ABC motif) and vacA s1/i1/m1–positive and has been extensively characterized in long-term animal infection studies, carrying virulence factors strongly associated with increased gastric cancer risk.
This strain exhibits robust and reproducible pathogenicity in vivo and drives progression from gastric inflammation to dysplasia and adenocarcinoma in established infection driven gastric cancer models, including the Mongolian gerbil. The strain retains virulence after in vitro passage and is amenable to genetic manipulation, making it well suited for gastric cancer research, host-pathogen interaction studies, and investigations of H. pylori virulence and disease progression.
