Documentation

ATCC determines the biosafety level of a material based on our risk assessment as guided by the current edition of Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It is your responsibility to understand the hazards associated with the material per your organization’s policies and procedures as well as any other applicable regulations as enforced by your local or national agencies.

ATCC highly recommends that appropriate personal protective equipment is always used when handling vials. For cultures that require storage in liquid nitrogen, it is important to note that some vials may leak when submersed in liquid nitrogen and will slowly fill with liquid nitrogen. Upon thawing, the conversion of the liquid nitrogen back to its gas phase may result in the vial exploding or blowing off its cap with dangerous force creating flying debris. Unless necessary, ATCC recommends that these cultures be stored in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen rather than submersed in liquid nitrogen.

Detailed product information

General

Specific applications
NGS Standards enable the optimization of metagenomics workflows and research applications, providing reliable comparative data while improving assay consistency.

This product is ideal for environmental analyses, assay development, and as a daily run control for molecular diagnostics and microbiome applications.

Characteristics

Comments
NGS Standards are mock microbial communities that mimic mixed metagenomic samples. The ABRF-MGRG metagenomics reference standard was developed and packaged in partnership with the Association of Biomolecular Resource Facilities (ABRF) Metagenomics and Microbiome Group (MMRG)*, an international scientific society dedicated to advancing technologies, education, communication, and reproducible research in the operations of shared scientific resources, as part of the Extreme Microbiome Project (XMP). This product comprises genomic DNA from fully sequenced**, characterized, and authenticated bacterial and archaeal species observed in various environments, including soil, freshwater, seawater, feces, and high salinity ecosystems. Further, this reference community was derived from Class I microbial genomes (Koren et al., Genome Biol 14(9):R101, 2013), was extracted to retain long fragments of gDNA, and is confirmed to be free of human DNA. Each order for this product is provided with access to run 20 analyses on One Codex, the leading bioinformatics platform for microbial genomics and metagenomics.

Specification Range: 4.25 ng/µL to 7.09 ng/µL***

*The bulk material for this product was deposited by ABRF-MGRG. The research group extracted DNA from each individual strain and mixed them in appropriate proportions.
**The reference genome for Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis is not available.
***DNA concentrations indicate ATCC manufacturing specifications and are provided as a reference only.
