ATCC highly recommends that appropriate personal protective equipment is always used when handling vials. For cultures that require storage in liquid nitrogen, it is important to note that some vials may leak when submersed in liquid nitrogen and will slowly fill with liquid nitrogen. Upon thawing, the conversion of the liquid nitrogen back to its gas phase may result in the vial exploding or blowing off its cap with dangerous force creating flying debris. Unless necessary, ATCC recommends that these cultures be stored in the vapor phase of liquid nitrogen rather than submersed in liquid nitrogen.

PA21 is one of the better characterized primate HAV strains that differs significantly from the HM175-like isolates [Brown et al., J, Virol. 63: 4932-37, 1989]. Hepatitis A antigen can be detected in infected cells by IF and in infected cell culture supernate by ELISA. This item has fungal contamination that can, with difficulty, be controlled with Amphotericin B.

PA21 is one of the better characteristic primate HAV strains that differ significantly from the HM175- like isolates. This holding is contaminated with fungus that can, with difficulty, be controlled by Amphotericin B. Prepared vials should be freeze-thawed 3 times to release the virus from the cells, spun to remove cellular debris and then filtered through a 0.2 mm filter before use to reduce problems with the fungal contamination.
