Meticulously curated microbial reference genomes
The ATCC Genome Portal is a rapidly growing ISO 9001–compliant database of high-quality reference genomes from authenticated microbial strains in the ATCC collection. Through this cloud-based platform, you can easily access and download meticulously curated whole-genome sequences from your browser or our secure API. With high-quality, annotated data at your fingertips, you can confidently perform bioinformatics analyses and make insightful correlations.

Protect your research
Current publicly available, consensus-driven genomic sequences often lack data authenticity, quality, completeness, or traceability, which can compromise your research. This gap in data provenance potentially complicates downstream bioinformatics applications and research objectives.
For scientists to make insightful correlations, they need access to rigorously validated reference genomes tied back to credible biological materials. That’s why we developed standardized genome sequencing, assembly, and genome annotation pipelines to provide researchers with the high-quality reference genomes of the authenticated microbial strains in our collection and made those data available through the ATCC Genome Portal.
Features and benefits
The ATCC Genome Portal offers more than just a collection of reference-grade bacterial, viral, fungal, and protist genomes originating from authenticated ATCC materials. It is a platform hosted with our partner One Codex where users can interactively browse genomic data and metadata.
- Browse and download whole-genome sequences and annotations for a variety of authenticated ATCC microbial strains.
- Search for nucleotide sequences or genes within published genomes.
- Search for genomes by taxonomic name, taxonomic level, isolation source, ATCC catalog number, type strain status, biosafety level, or certain tags.
- View genome assembly statistics and quality metrics.
- Identify the relatedness of published genomes by total genome alignment.
- Purchase the corresponding authenticated ATCC source material.
Announcement of Upcoming ChangesTo guarantee the long-term sustainability of the portal and to continue to provide you with reference-quality genomes, we are transitioning the ATCC Genome Portal over to a supporting membership service starting May 1, 2024. As a supporting member of the ATCC Genome Portal, you will not only benefit from the features and benefits described above but also gain access to our secure REST API, 12 free Discrepancy Reports per year, and all future extended capabilities such as bulk download options and an improved AMR annotation pipeline. If you choose not to pursue a supporting membership, you will still have access to the genomic data for strains you purchase from ATCC as well as the ability to search for and view genomes of interest on the ATCC Genome Portal. However, a supporting membership will be required to access our premium features and to download the genome assemblies and annotations for non-purchased products. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about these changes or would like to provide us with feedback. |
Understand our approach
Our optimized methodology is designed to achieve complete, circularized (when biologically appropriate), and contiguous genomic elements by using short-read (virology collection) and hybrid (bacteriology, mycology, and protistology collections) assembly techniques. We then take our workflow one step further by accompanying each stage of the process with rigorous quality control analyses that ensure the highest quality data. Only the data that passes all quality control criteria are published to the ATCC Genome Portal.
