Authentic, standardized omics data for ATCC microbes and cell lines
Researchers need rigorously validated, traceable genomic data to make reliable scientific correlations—but publicly available sequences often lack authenticity, quality, and provenance. To close this gap, ATCC developed standardized sequencing, assembly, and annotation pipelines that deliver high-quality reference genomes from our authenticated microbial strains, along with whole-exome and RNA-seq data from our cell lines. These datasets are accessible through the ATCC Genome Portal—a rapidly growing, ISO 9001–compliant, cloud-based platform offering authenticated NGS data, comprehensive metadata, and advanced tools for reproducible analyses.

Frequently asked questions
What is the advantage of becoming a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?
Current publicly available, consensus-driven genomic sequences often lack data authenticity, quality, completeness, or traceability, which can compromise your research. This gap in data provenance potentially complicates downstream bioinformatics applications and research objectives.
For scientists to make insightful correlations, they need access to rigorously validated reference genomes tied back to credible biological materials. That’s why we developed standardized genome sequencing, assembly, and genome annotation pipelines to provide researchers with the high-quality reference genomes of the authenticated microbial strains in our collection and made those data available through the ATCC Genome Portal. By becoming a Supporting Member, you will have full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the portal in addition to a variety of tools and resources.
Why did ATCC transition the ATCC Genome Portal to a Supporting Membership model?
The changes are due to the costs associated with sequencing, bioinformatics analysis, and data storage and maintenance, necessitating support from the scientific community for long-term sustainability.
What are the benefits of opting in as a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?
As a Supporting Member, you will benefit from full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the ATCC Genome Portal, our secure REST-API, and all new extended capabilities such as our Discrepancy Reports. To become a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal, please visit the ATCC Genome Portal here.
How often are new genomes added to the ATCC Genome Portal?
New genomes will be continually released to the ATCC Genome Portal on a quarterly basis. We aim to deliver a minimum of 1,000 new authenticated genome assemblies each year.
What is a Discrepancy Report?
Our Discrepancy Reports enable you to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of your genomic data against our reference-quality genomes through a complete assessment of SNPS, indels, deletions, and other genetic differences. These reports are provided as both human-readable PDFs and in a standardized machine-readable (JSON) format.
How do I access the genome sequencing data for a product?
Genome sequencing data for products that you have purchased can be accessed and downloaded at genomes.atcc.org.
- Navigate to the ATCC Genome Portal at genomes.atcc.org.
- Log in to the portal using your ATCC web profile credentials. If you don’t have an ATCC web profile, you can create one here.
- Use the search field to find the genome of the strain you purchased.
- Click on “Download”, “Download assembly,” or “Download annotations”.
- Enter the lot number of your product when prompted.
To access the genomes of non-purchased products, you will need to either purchase the material or to obtain a Supporting Membership to the ATCC Genome Portal here.
If I only need data for a few microbial strains, how will becoming a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal enhance my experience?
By becoming a Supporting Member, you will have full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the ATCC Genome Portal in addition to our premium features and benefits such as access to our secure REST-API and Discrepancy Reports.
If you decide not to become a Supporting Member, you will still have access to our authenticated reference genome assemblies for the microbial strains you purchased from ATCC as well as any updates to that data as it becomes available. You will also be able to search for genomes of interest and view organism and genome metadata, assemblies, and annotations. Depending on the number of microbial strains needed, it may be more cost effective to only purchase the strains needed. However, we hope you will consider becoming a Supporting Member to ensure the long-term sustainability of the portal and enable ATCC to continue to provide reference-quality genomes.
What happens if I choose not to opt in as a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?
If you decide not to become a Supporting Member, you will still have access to our authenticated reference genome assemblies for the microbial strains you purchased from ATCC as well as any updates to that data as it becomes available. You will also be able to search for genomes of interest and view organism and genome metadata, assemblies, and annotations.
