Protect your research

screenshot of ATCC Genome PortalCurrent publicly available, consensus-driven genomic sequences often lack data authenticity, quality, completeness, or traceability, which can compromise your research. This gap in data provenance potentially complicates downstream bioinformatics applications and research objectives.

For scientists to make insightful correlations, they need access to rigorously validated reference genomes tied back to credible biological materials. That’s why we developed standardized genome sequencing, assembly, and genome annotation pipelines to provide researchers with the high-quality reference genomes of the authenticated microbial strains in our collection and made those data available through the ATCC Genome Portal.

Two female scientists iStock-1302454417.jpgThe ATCC Genome Portal offers more than just a collection of reference-grade bacterial, viral, fungal, and protist genomes originating from authenticated ATCC materials. It is a platform hosted with our partner One Codex where users can interactively browse genomic data and metadata. By becoming a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal, you can experience all the premium features and benefits the portal has to offer.

  • Access and download the genome assemblies, standardized annotations, and curated metadata for any of the thousands of authenticated microbial strains available through the ATCC Genome Portal.
  • Search for nucleotide sequences or genes within published genomes.
  • Search for genomes by taxonomic name, taxonomic level, isolation source, ATCC catalog number, type strain status, biosafety level, or certain tags.
  • View genome assembly statistics and quality metrics.
  • Identify the relatedness of published genomes by total genome alignment.
  • Use our Discrepancy Reports to align your sequencing data with our reference-quality genomes to evaluate SNPs, indels, deletions, and other genetic differences.
  • Purchase the corresponding authenticated ATCC source material.

See what others are saying about the ATCC Genome Portal

"Our work requires us to frequently reference genome sequences of organisms purchased from ATCC. I believe the ATCC Genome Portal is one of the best resources for us."

Liben Chen, Research Scientist
The Johns Hopkins University

“It is easy to find the high-quality whole-genome sequencing data needed for research.”

Nan-yeong Go
ToolGen.inc

“I trust that the content and annotation of the genomes are accurate. Also, I don't have to dig around NCBI for a sequence that looks complete or is from a trustworthy source.”

Understand our approach

Our optimized methodology is designed to achieve complete, circularized (when biologically appropriate), and contiguous genomic elements by using short-read (virology collection) and hybrid (bacteriology, mycology, and protistology collections) assembly techniques. We then take our workflow one step further by accompanying each stage of the process with rigorous quality control analyses that ensure the highest quality data. Only the data that passes all quality control criteria are published to the ATCC Genome Portal.

Frequently asked questions

What is the advantage of becoming a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?

Current publicly available, consensus-driven genomic sequences often lack data authenticity, quality, completeness, or traceability, which can compromise your research.

By becoming a Supporting Member, you will have full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the portal in addition to a variety of tools and resources.

Why did ATCC transition the ATCC Genome Portal to a Supporting Membership model?

The changes are due to the costs associated with sequencing, bioinformatics analysis, and data storage and maintenance, necessitating support from the scientific community for long-term sustainability.

What are the benefits of opting in as a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?

As a Supporting Member, you will benefit from full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the ATCC Genome Portal, our secure REST-API, and all new extended capabilities such as our Discrepancy Reports. To become a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal, please visit the ATCC Genome Portal here.

How often are new genomes added to the ATCC Genome Portal?

New genomes will be continually released to the ATCC Genome Portal on a quarterly basis. We aim to deliver a minimum of 1,000 new authenticated genome assemblies each year.

What is a Discrepancy Report?

Our Discrepancy Reports enable you to evaluate the accuracy and consistency of your genomic data against our reference-quality genomes through a complete assessment of SNPS, indels, deletions, and other genetic differences. These reports are provided as both human-readable PDFs and in a standardized machine-readable (JSON) format.

How do I access the genome sequencing data for a product?

Genome sequencing data for products that you have purchased can be accessed and downloaded at genomes.atcc.org.

  1. Navigate to the ATCC Genome Portal at genomes.atcc.org.
  2. Log in to the portal using your ATCC web profile credentials. If you don’t have an ATCC web profile, you can create one here.
  3. Use the search field to find the genome of the strain you purchased.
  4. Click on “Download”, “Download assembly,” or “Download annotations”.
  5. Enter the lot number of your product when prompted.

To access the genomes of non-purchased products, you will need to either purchase the material or to obtain a Supporting Membership to the ATCC Genome Portal here.

If I only need data for a few microbial strains, how will becoming a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal enhance my experience?

By becoming a Supporting Member, you will have full access to any of the authenticated genome assemblies available through the ATCC Genome Portal in addition to our premium features and benefits such as access to our secure REST-API and Discrepancy Reports.

If you decide not to become a Supporting Member, you will still have access to our authenticated reference genome assemblies for the microbial strains you purchased from ATCC as well as any updates to that data as it becomes available. You will also be able to search for genomes of interest and view organism and genome metadata, assemblies, and annotations. Depending on the number of microbial strains needed, it may be more cost effective to only purchase the strains needed. However, we hope you will consider becoming a Supporting Member to ensure the long-term sustainability of the portal and enable ATCC to continue to provide reference-quality genomes.

What happens if I choose not to opt in as a Supporting Member of the ATCC Genome Portal?

If you decide not to become a Supporting Member, you will still have access to our authenticated reference genome assemblies for the microbial strains you purchased from ATCC as well as any updates to that data as it becomes available. You will also be able to search for genomes of interest and view organism and genome metadata, assemblies, and annotations.
