Possibility of cross-reactions with other coronaviruses not thoroughly characterized at time of deposit (1973); does not cross-react with human myxoviruses. Ether sensitive. No hemolysis production. Unstable at 24 & 37C; relatively stable at 10C.
Harvest 26-50 hrs post adsorption before CPE is visible. Does not agglutinate chicken, guinea pig, human O, sheep, mouse or rat RBC. Size 89Mu (gradocol filtration). [RU1 are human embryonic lung fibroblasts developed by CDC]
Effect on Host
CPE, rounding and sloughing. Starts as individual cell rounding that spreads, but over time uninfected cells repopulate monolayer.

Growth Conditions Temperature: 35°C
Recommendations for Infection: For best results cells should be 24 to 48 hours old and 80-90% confluent (not 100% confluent).
Incubation: 2-7 days, a 5% CO2 in air atmosphere is recommended.
