    ATCC® Number: 30-2220
    Quantity: 100 mL
Storage: Store Penicillin-Streptomycin-Glutamine Solution frozen at -20°C or colder.
    Applications:

Penicillin and streptomycin reduce the chance of microbial contamination in cell culture. L-glutamine is an essential amino acid required by virtually all mammalian and insect cells grown in culture. However, it is more labile than other amino acids; the rate and extent of L-glutamine degradation depends upon the storage temperature, age, and pH of the cell culture medium.

The combination of these three reagents in one solution provides a convenient means to supplement your cell culture medium in less time and with less risk from contamination than by adding them separately.

All cell culture media are formulated to contain appropriate amounts of L-glutamine to support cell growth well beyond the expiration date of the media. However, if L-glutamine is suspected to be a limiting factor during cell culture, a simple test of 'spiking' the medium with a small amount of Penicillin-Streptomycin-Glutamine Solution will determine whether or not more is required.

Please note: L-glutamine degradation results in the build-up of ammonia which can have a deleterious effect on some cell lines. Use caution when adding more L-glutamine than called for in the original medium formulation (2 to 4 mM is standard). For most cell lines, ammonia toxicity is more critical for cell viability than L-glutamine limitation.

Comments: NOTE: Most cell culture technologists avoid using antibiotics and antimycotics for routine culture work. Antibiotics and antimycotics may mask contamination by susceptible bacteria and fungi while permitting mycoplasma to flourish unnoticed. Antibiotics and antimycotics may interfere with the metabolism of sensitive cells in culture. However, one may elect to introduce antibiotics and antimycotics for short periods to primary cultures or as a safeguard while propagating specific valuable stocks.
