ATCC regularly competes for grants and contracts that align with its mission and capabilities. ATCC scientists hold RO1-type research grants in a variety of disciplines, such as taxonomy, bioinformatics, extremophiles and proteomics. The organization targets its unique expertise in the management of biological materials and data toward competitively awarded contracts from both government agencies and private foundations. Through its contracts, ATCC has set up several important resources for the scientific community in public health and other areas. Examples include:
-
BEI Resources was established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to provide reagents, tools and information for studying Category A, B, and C priority pathogens, emerging infectious disease agents, non-pathogenic microbes and other microbiological materials of relevance to the research community. ATCC has been managing the BEI Resources under contract with NIAID since 2003. A seven-year contract to continue managing BEI Resources was awarded to ATCC in June 2010. The BEI Resources program falls under NIAID’s Biological Research Resources Program and is funding through the Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Biological Resource Repository (MID-BRR) contract.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Tim Stedman
Funding Agency: National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

The Malaria Research and Reference Reagent Resource Center (MR4) was established by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) to provide malaria-related reagents and information to the international malaria research community. ATCC has been managing the MR4 under contract with NIAID since 1998. In 2011, MR4 was integrated with NIAID's BEI Resources as one of multiple repository collections.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Tim Stedman
Funding Agency: National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)

The Influenza Reagent Resource (IRR) was established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to provide registered users with reagents, tools and information for studying and detection of Influenza Virus. The IRR acquires, authenticates, and produces reagents that scientists need to carry out basic research and develop improved diagnostic tests, vaccines, and detection methods. Public health labs also use the reagents across the globe for the surveillance of newly emerging strains of Influenza, such as Influenza (H1N1) and (H5N1). By centralizing these functions within the IRR, access to and use of these materials in the scientific and public health community is monitored and quality control of the reagents is assured.
The Influenza Reagent Resource is managed under contract by American Type Culture Collection (ATCC). A one-year contract with nine option years to manage IRR was awarded to ATCC in September 2008.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Ted Mullins
Funding Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

Procurement of DNA, RNA and Transformed Lymphocytes, Lymphoblastoid Lines for Genetic Research is a program established by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to provide the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG) with reagents used to monitor genetic changes in response to environmental factors. In support of this contract tasks include the processing of whole blood and other biospecimen (oral rinse, bone marrow), isolation and cryopreservation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs), immortalization of PBMC with Epstein-Barr virus and isolation of nucleic acids (DNA, RNA). ATCC has been contracted by NCI to provide this service since 1986.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Yvonne Reid
Funding Agency: Lymphoma Research Foundation
-
CDC & ATSDR Specimen and Inventory Retrieval System (CASPIR) was established by CDC to consolidate and manage the vast collection of biological resources housed at CDC. ATCC has been managing CASPIR and providing additional services to CDC since 1997.
Principal Investigator: Frank Simione
Funding Agency: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

ATCC Mantle Cell Lymphoma Consortium (MCLC) Collection is intended to supply investigators in the lymphoma research community with well-characterized, consistent and uncontaminated cell lines for research use. Established in 2006, the ATCC-MCLC collection is the result of a contract awarded to ATCC by the Lymphoma Research Foundation to establish a cell bank resource to serve the mantle cell lymphoma research community.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Yvonne Reid
Funding Agency: National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute

Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) Laboratory Testing and Repository Service (LTRS) authorizes ATCC to submit bids on discrete Indefinite Delivery, Definite Quantity (ID/IQ) contracts that are in support of BARDA’s efforts to develop a Laboratory Testing and Repository Service (LTRS). The LTRS is being established to ensure the availability of influenza viruses, clinical specimens and diagnostic testing data as part of the national strategy for pandemic influenza. Laboratory work that would be required under these ID/IQ contracts leverages ATCC core capabilities and includes viral propagation, identification, quantification, and characterization of viral proteins and nucleic acids; preparation of protocols and testing plans; documentation of summary findings, preparation of reports; and transferring samples to other designated laboratories for testing.
Principal Investigator: Dr. Kurt Lagenbach
Funding Agency: BARDA
