ATCC Science

ATCC is committed to serving the scientific community and to optimizing the iterative process of knowledge building that characterizes the scientific enterprise. Part of its effectiveness as a valued research resource is owed to a cadre of experienced, doctoral-level scientists. Their work underpins the organization’s ability to provide widespread access to a diverse collection of high-quality biological materials.

Large and diverse bio-collections constitute the core scientific holdings of ATCC and impact the advancement of research and medicine. ATCC scientists employ cutting-edge technologies and strive to perform all activities, including acquisition, preservation, authentication and production of biological materials, at the highest standards. ATCC conducts independent research in support of its mission to provide high-quality reagents (some of which serve as standards) for academia, government and industry. Research programs at ATCC represent a diverse portfolio, including:

  • Improved preservation and characterization methods
  • Detailed and modern authentication
  • Descriptions of new species
  • Genomics
  • In vitro cell biology
  • Disease diagnosis and prevention

Significant emphasis within ATCC's science program is placed on translational research — investigation aimed at transforming basic science discoveries into medicines and research products. Researchers at ATCC use modern techniques in molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, immunology and bioinformatics to search for biomarkers associated with diseases, as well as develop new assays and evaluate new authentication and preservation technologies. Research and development programs at ATCC include the development of disease-specific biomarkers for diagnostic and therapeutic applications in pancreatic cancer, cancer stem cells, type 2 diabetes and infectious diseases.

Technical Support and Expert Advice
Technical support is offered by each department, unit and collection of ATCC by a specially trained team of scientists who work closely with the Technical Services Representatives to provide technical assistance to the customer. The technical support team is versed in all aspects of the accessioning processes, including propagation, characterization, cryopreservation and distribution of cell lines, cultures, and reagents. Our scientists acquired an extensive knowledge developed through many years of growing, handling, and studying living cells and microorganisms. This knowledge is shared with our customers in the scientific community and is part of ATCC delivering its mission. The technical support team continues to seek customers’ suggestions, wants & needs as well as comments to enhance the collections and portfolio of products and services.
