Since 1925, ATCC has served the research community by providing validated biological reference materials in support of scientific advancement. As the world's leading biological resource center, ATCC acquires, authenticates, preserves and distributes cell lines, microorganisms and other materials for researchers in the public and private sectors.
The 21st-century research and development environment has changed markedly from even 15 years ago. Today's life science landscape is characterized by a much more commercial view of biotechnology than in the past, with intellectual property concerns and commercial rights attached to virtually every piece of work. The increasing awareness of potential public health risks from the transport and use of biological materials has resulted in regulatory constraints that must be negotiated to engage in productive R&D.
ATCC's mission requires the organization to provide equitable access to its materials. For ATCC to function effectively and fulfill its mission in the modern R&D environment, it must take measures to protect the rights of all parties involved in the use of its products. Among the mechanisms set up by ATCC for this purpose are the Material Transfer Agreement (MTA), licensing arrangements for Commercial Use of ATCC materials and the ATCC Licensed Derivative program.
