- Many ATCC cultures are specified by Standard Development organizations and government agencies for use in their official assays and tests. Manufacturers of microbial identification systems also specify ATCC microorganisms for the quality testing of instrumentation, kits or reagents. The ATCC Standards Resource® provides a Web-based tool by which these procedural standards and commercial systems are cross-referenced with recommended ATCC cultures. The searchable database enables the customer to easily find and purchase the ATCC cultures associated with standards and protocols.
- A public health incident occurred in 2005 regarding the accidental release of a non-circulating H2N2 influenza strain into a viral proficiency panel. Although ATCC was in no way responsible for this hazardous event, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) requested help from ATCC in ensuring a similar event does not recur. In line with our continuous effort to protect public health, safety and the environment, the ATCC Proficiency Standard® program was developed. By providing proficiency testing stocks that are lot- and vial-traceable, verified using polyphasic characterization testing to confirm identity and accompanied by a detailed Certificate of Analysis, the program ensures that standard starting materials for proficiency testing (PT) panels are available, under a license agreement, for PT service providers and manufacturers. The chain-of-custody established by the ATCC Proficiency Testing Standard program ensures that proficiency testing panels are consistent, safe, reliable and traceable to their source.
- ATCC Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are produced under ISO Guide 34:2000 and ISO 17025:2005 accredited and ISO 9001:2008 certified laboratories. The combined accreditations demonstrate the highest level of quality assurance, accuracy and traceability for ATCC customers. ATCC Certified Reference Materials are intended to be used to challenge assay performance, validate or compare test methods, and to establish sensitivity, linearity and specificity during assay validation or implementation. CRMs are an important tool for method validation and method-performance verification. They also provide the consistency needed for testing and calibration performed in ISO 17025 accredited laboratories. ATCC Certified Reference Materials include cell lines, bacteria, fungi and yeast.
- The ATCC Standards Development Organization (SDO) is a developer and publisher of stakeholder-proposed, industry-relevant, consensus standards for biomaterials and related processes. In 2007 the ATCC Standards Development Organization (SDO) became the first biological resource organization to become an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited SDO. The mission of the ATCC Standards Development Organization (SDO) is to develop best practices (standards) for use in the life science industry and to promote their use globally, using a consensus driven process that balances the viewpoints of industry, government, regulatory and academic professionals.
